About FFDS Courses

FFDS offers accredited part-time and full-time courses in factual, documentary and reality TV filmmaking.

Full-Time Course:

Our full-time course option equips students with the necessary skills and experience required across all facets of digital filmmaking and production, instilling creative confidence and artistic independence in a hands-on learning environment. The course covers filmmaking’s technical and innovative components, including concept development, screenwriting, camera operation, production management, directing, editing, and sound design.

At FFDS, we always encourage our students to pursue projects close to their preferred area of interest to develop their skills as directors, producers and editors. Students at FFDS are also exposed to film-related business management, marketing, communications and knowledge of the contemporary ‘entertainment’ industry.

The history and stylistic spectrum of the documentary genre, focus on film language, techniques, aesthetics, structure and other elements of cinematic storytelling.

Students will focus in-depth on the pre-production and development of their graduate factual, documentary or reality TV film – , including completing weekly assignments for instructors, peer review and extensive brainstorming and pitching sessions. Students will also apply these lessons when learning how to research and write a compelling proposal. After  graduation and the completion of their qualification, our students will leave FFDS with a comprehensive understanding of documentary and factual film production as well as a portfolio of film projects which they can develop and turn into a reality.

Part-Time Short Course: 

The short course at FFDS aims to condense factual, documentary and reality TV filmmaking into an intensive four-week course, designed to provide students with experience in all aspects of filmmaking and production. This course looks to build creative confidence and artistic independence through interactive live sessions online complemented by practical hands-on learning in the working environment at our studio facility. The course covers technical and creative components of filmmaking, including concept development, screenwriting, camera operation, production management, directing, editing, and sound design.

Basic Entry Requirements

To be accepted by FFDS, a student would need to have attained the following educational requirements:

  • A National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent academic learning of an NQF 4 qualification or higher.
  • Computer literacy.
  • English Language Proficiency
  • Successful applicants for all courses must be proficient in written and spoken English.

In case of TOEFL or IELTS testing, students must score:

  • 6.0 on IELTS
  • 550 on TOEFL (paper-based)
  • 213 on TOEFL (computer-based)
  • 79 (Internet based)

If an applicant is a native English speaker or has studied in the medium of English on a secondary or post-secondary level, then the English language test requirement may be waived.
